Our good friends at Call of the Sea are offering an Ocean Experience aboard the 82′ schooner Seaward. During this 5-day/4-night sea-going adventure, under the guidance of a professional captain and crew, participants will have the opportunity to be part of the workings of a schooner under sail and passagemaking along the Northern California coast.

Message from the Captain:
The plan for the voyage is to go out the gate and get to Drakes Bay, Bodega Bay, the Farallons and Monterey Bay (all weather permitting.) During the voyage myself and the crew will focus on giving the passengers as much of a hands on experience as they would like to have. While underway passengers will be encouraged to help sail the schooner as part of a working crew, they will assist in the setting and striking of sails, the handling of sails during maneuvers, steering, navigating and standing watch. The navigation portion will be basic coastal navigation which will include taking and recording electronic fixes and dead reckoning fixes, plotting our course on the chart and tracking radar targets. While at anchor participants will assist me in my voyage planning taking into account the winds, seas, distances etc. We will also discuss weather and look at how it can affect the decision making process when considering voyage plans. While at anchor at night those who would like to will stand an anchor watch and follow my standing orders for the night. This will include taking fixes with a hand bearing compass, watching the GPS, Radar, and depth sounder, and watching for significant changes in weather.
