Interview with John Speakman- onboard since 2009
What sailing experience did you have before you came to OCSC?
Years ago I sailed with friends as a passenger on a Cheoy Lee 36 and an Islander 28. I had a limited understanding of the skills involved and always wanted to learn more.
What do you like about sailing?
Everything! It’s a challenging, interactive sport that never gets old. You learn something new every time you go out.
What brought you to OCSC?
I was looking for local instruction and found OCSC online.
Why did you decide to become a member?
I was impressed with the comprehensive curriculum and emphasis on safety. Instructors are knowledgeble and each brings a unique perspective that develops and broadens your confidence and competence. In addition I was drawn to the economic and social benefits of chartering.
What sailing goals do you have?
I will be “first mate” on a boat on this year’s Turkey Flotilla and hope to skipper my own boat on a flotilla next year. Eventually I would like to earn ceritification in Coastal Passagemaking.
What do you do when you’re not sailing?
I enjoy traveling, gardening and A’s baseball.
Thanks for the interview John!
