Meet OCSC SAILING Member Lauren Hamme! She is a US Sailing Basic Keelboat and Cruising graduate and charters our J/24’s and was kind enough to share some of her experience with us.

What sailing experience did you have before you came to OCSC?

My parents had a sailboat when I was little and I got back into the sport in college by taking a sailing PE class using 420s on Lake Cayuga. When I moved to the Washington D.C. area after college, I joined D.C. Sail, a community sailing program and became interested in racing FJs. Through racing I met several sailors and began sailing on J/80s, J/32s and J/105s and went on a week long charter in BVI on a Beneteau 51.5.

What do you like about sailing?
I love the constant challenges that sailing brings. Every time you go sailing, the experience will be different and there is always be something new to learn.

What brought you to OCSC?
OCSC was highly recommended by several of my sailing friends in DC who had done their US Sailing certifications here.

Why did you decide to become a member?
I originally became a member to be able to charter boats after taking Basic Cruising and stayed on for the benefits as I continue my sailing education.

What sailing goals do you have?
In the next year or two, I want to sail to Catalina and skipper a charter in BVI. Longer term, I’m looking forward to sailing around the world!

What do you do when you’re not sailing?
Besides working, I ski and play social sports.
