I’ve been an active volunteer for US SAILING since the mid-1990s and have been a director of US SAILING as well as chair of both the Training Committee and the Commercial Sailing Schools committee. I just love it! I rub elbows with some of the best sailors in the world, from America’s Cup to Volvo Ocean Race veterans, as well as past and current sailing Olympians.
I’ve just returned from three days of invigorating discussion, debate and brainstorming at the US SAILING 2010 Spring Meeting, in Warwick, RI. Topics were wide ranging and all focused on making the sport of sailing more accessible, creating better sailors and continuing to grow US SAILING’s leadership in safety initiatives such as life jacket wear and instructor certification. The highlight was a two hour ‘Town Hall’ meeting facilitated by Gary Jobson, US SAILING’s president and renowned America’s Cup victor/ESPN Sailing Commentator. This created vigorous discussion and debate on everything from the roles of yacht clubs and public access sailing clubs (like OCSC) to the changing demographics of sailing. Gary is a dynamic speaker and was an even better facilitator. I spent much of my time providing advice on educational issues to the Recreation Division (supports non-racing sailors in the US) as well as the Competition Division (training of judges and race officers). I also brainstormed with the membership department of US SAILING to determine what specific benefits would be appealing to clients of schools and clubs like OCSC. We came up with some really interesting ideas, but, I’d like to hear from you! If you have (or had) a US SAILING membership from your Keelboat Certification, let me know what benefits of US SAILING membership would keep you as a US SAILING member year in and year out. I can be reached at email@example.com . And, check out these links for descriptions of general membership and Keelboat Graduate member benefits!
See you ’round the Club soon!
